What sort of organisations can apply to use Window on Woking?

Any 'not-for-profit' organisation that provides services to the local community, or whose membership includes the local community, may register to use the community website.   

Our organisation already has its own website - so can we register with the community site? And what are the advantages of joining? 

Many community organisations already have their own website.  WIndow on Woking's search facilities can help people to find these websites and raise awarness of an organisation's activities.   It also provides a single point of local information and enables organisations to promote their events through the Diary.  In addition, Window on Woking provides many features that are unavailable to local organisations through their own websites, including intranet.   However, one of the biggest advantages is its very simple publishing system, which enables anyone with internet access and a few minutes of online training to create their own high quality web pages.  This means an organisation no-longer has to rely on an individual 'webmaster' to keep their website up to date

Is there any limit on the number of pages we can add?

No, you can add as many pages to your site on Window on Woking as you wish.

Can we upload images?

Yes.  Your images will need to be in JPEG or GIF format.

What level of computer skill is needed to create web pages?

We've tried to make the system as easy to use as possible.  If you're comfortable with the World Wide Web and email, and have used word-processing software such as Microsoft Word, you should be able to develop your pages on Window on Woking.

Do I need to download special software?

No, the system operates entirely through your web browser.

The administration facilities currently only work fully with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, but we are working to add support for Firefox 1.5 as soon as possible.

What information is required to join?

All we need is:

  • Contact details for the person registering the organisation, and;
  • A description of the organisation, its activities and contact details 

Who is responsible for making changes to my organisation's information and keeping it up to date?

The key thing to remember is that Window on Woking puts local community organisations in control of their own information - so they are responsible for keeping their web pages up to date.  The Support team at Window on Woking is there to help you do this, but is not responsible for the actual information on the web pages.

If I register with Window on Woking, how do I know I am not going to get spam emails?

We do our best to disguise the email address of your organisation on your homepage so that it can't easily be harvested by automatic systems, but we can't guarantee that it won't be.  However, we'll never use your email address for marketing, and we'll never give it away to third parties.

The personal email address you use to set up your login with Window on Woking will never be revealed to the public, and never sold or given away to third parties.

What does the 'Register With This Organisation' feature do?

You can publish content to Window on Woking that isn't available to the general public, but is restricted to people who have logged-in to the site and registered with your organisation.

You will be informed by email when anyone clicks to register with your organisation, and asked to approve or reject their registration.  You can choose to limit registrations only to full members of your organisation if you wish.
