Smoke free Woking

Local people can look forward to clean, smoke-free air in virtually every enclosed work and public place in Woking now that legislation has been implemented preventing the practice.

For the past six months, the LSP has been making contact with local businesses to highlight the benefits of smoke-free space and encourage them to introduce policies to protect their customers and staff. In the summer 2006, Woking Borough Council decided to lead by example and introduce a smoke-free policy in all Council operated buildings and vehicles.

Speaking about the health benefits of the smoking ban, Karen Simmonds from the local Primary Care Trust, said: "Second-hand smoke can cause a range of serious illnesses including lung cancer, coronary heart disease and strokes. Everyone has the basic right to breath in clean air and we welcome the news England is smoke-free."

Other countries, including Ireland, that have already gone smoke-free have proved that taking this step can work and have a positive effect on business. Peter Kleyn, Chairman of the LSP and representing the Woking Chamber of Trade and Commerce, commented: "The majority of people don't smoke and would prefer to visit smoke-free environments. Taking steps to implement a policy could make many people more likely to visit a pub, café or restaurant, safe in the knowledge that they will not have to breathe in other people's smoke."

Businesses who would like to get free advice on developing a smoke-free policy in their workplaces can call 0845 602 3608. Everyone who develops a policy will be asked to sign up to Woking's Smoke-free Charter and their details will be published on the Woking Borough Council's website to show others that they are committed to protecting others.

From 1st July 2007, virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces will be smoke-free environments. This will include offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, membership clubs, public transport and work vehicles that are used by more than one person. The law will also mean indoor smoking rooms, still common in workplaces, will no longer be allowed. So anyone wishing to smoke will have to go outside instead.
