TALKS & DISPLAYS

For over twenty-five years Iain has been giving talks and arranging displays on the history of Woking. As organiser of the Woking History Festival in the 1990’s, Iain helped to show that Woking has a wealth of history, and through his talks to local schools and organisations he has helped to bring local history alive. His involvement with the Woking Community Play Association and their monumental millennium project, included eleven dramatised walks around the borough - all written and directed by Iain.

Illustrated talks based on his books include

‘Woking 150 – the History of Woking and the railway’,

‘The Industrial History of the Borough of Woking’,

‘Wells, Woking & the Real War of the Worlds’,

‘Woking Town Centre – an illustrated history’,

and ‘Bygone Woking’ including talks looking at every village of the borough.

Exhibitions and Displays

Exhibition and displays by Iain have included in the past the Woking History Festival’s of the 1980’s and in recent years displays at the Surrey & Hampshire Canal Society’s annual ‘Canal Festival’ at Bridge Barn. He has also arranged displays on local history for commercial organisations including Hampton’s and Tony Lynch estate agencies.

Research and Writing

As well as writing numerous books and booklets on the history of the area, Iain has also written countless articles for local newspapers and magazines. In 1995, to celebrate the centenary of ‘The Woking News & Mail’, Iain wrote a weekly column looking back at past editions of the newspaper, and in recent years he has been a consultant on websites and books.

If your organisation would like a talk or display, or would like to commission Iain to research or write an article for your company, please contact Iain for more details.
