We have had several emails about the two names DORIS M. LUKER AND JAMES R. LUKER which we thought MAY be a unique case for a memorial in the UK. It is a brother and sister listed on the same memorial during WW1. HOWEVER THIS IS NOT THE CASE. The Great War Forum discussed this and the feedback was that IT IS NOT UNIQUE in the country. See below under their names for more details.....

DEDICATED VICTORIA GARDENS

(ALSO CALLED SPARROW PARK) 1922

--------------------------------------------

(this block of information was sent in by a Woking researcher)

I can tell you that the names on the Woking memorial are only those that lost their lives in WW1, what confuses people to think the names represent both wars is the added inscription that was made after WW2.

The 1939 -45 inscription was all they could fit on the memorial, there was not enough room to list any names as Woking lost a considerable amount of men in WW1, every name you see which is just over 500 are all WW1 casualties.

Those who lost their lives in WW2 are recorded in a book of remembrance which is held in Woking library in a glass display case and a new page is turned each day so every soldier gets an opportunity to have his name displayed during the course of the year.
(It was emailed to us, if you can help with more please do!)

We have had an email about the next two names. It is a brother and sister listed on the same memorial during WW1. Their parents (James and Mary) lived at 4 Oaks Road off Goldsworth Road. Doris joined up in 1917 after her brothers death.

DORIS M. LUKER (Doris Mary Luker died 1919 aged 21 - NOT BORIS AS LISTED BEFORE)

JAMES R. LUKER (James Ryder Luker died 1916 aged 21 - also listed on the Horsell and Woking Christ Church Memorial)

The following email was sent to us about these names and note we have had info since confirming they are not unique...

Pleased you now have a Digital Camera, I borrow my daughters, so you are doing better than me! You have taken a lot of care to get the names clearly shown, I can see my Great-Grandfathers name very clearly F C Northcote and you have captured the brother and sister I mentioned to you. I would be happy if you referred to the brother and sister link on your site and happy for you to mention my name, I have been in touch with the Imperial War Museum memorial team and they think it is probably the only brother and sister listed on any memorial in this country during WW1.

(NOTE WE SINCE HAVE INFO THAT THIS IS NOT THE CASE. SEE THE GREAT WAR FORUM..April 2009). They are undertaking some further research, but this could take some time, women casaulties in WW1 are very rare anyway, so its quite unusual to find a women on any  WW1 memorial, but to have a brother makes it as far as we know unique. It is a remarkable story of a brother being killed early in the war and his sister then joining up, no doubt as a reaction to her brother being killed to eventually meet the same fate as her brother in France.
The reason you missed the brother and sister link is because I noticed you misread the christian name of the women instead of Doris you wrote down Boris, easy done now that I have just seen your photograph, age and weathering has made the letter D look more like a B.
I hope this helps you with your site and I will provide you with more remarkable stories of WW1 casualties listed on the Woking War memorial, the youngest is 16 years of age, he was in the Navy, I haven't got his details to hand but its information like that which will help bring some of the names to life. I will try to dig out some of my earlier research.
