Woking Ex Servicemens Memorial
Woking Ex Servicemens Memorial
We have had an email in to us that gives information on this memorial.
With regards to the missing information on the Woking war memorial for the Woking Ex Service mens club in Maybury Road Woking there wasn't an actual list of names but it had two memorial stone slabs which were in the wall representing men and women from WW1 and WW2.
These are in the process of being repositioned in the new flats that now stand on the former ex service men site, there are two recesses in the brickwork near the front door entrance to the flats where these stones will be repositioned.
There was a stained glass window which was paid for by the widows and friends and family of local men to remember those that had died in WW1 in the 1920's and it depicts scenes from all battle fronts air, sea and land and is a remarkable survivor from this time showing no mans land and tanks in stained glass.
I safed this and is now held in storage in the Peacocks along with many other Woking artefacts I assume now under the control of the Woking Lightbox, the original intent was to have the glass erected in the new Woking museum when it opened, not sure what is happening now?
