Sir Samuel Morton Peto, the Victorian contractor responsible for the building of Nelson's Column was born at Whitmoor House, Sutton near Woking in August 1809 and baptised at St Peter's in Old Woking. Peto was also one of the main contractors involved in the re-building of the Houses of Parliament from 1840 to 1852.
