Description

We are a campaign group that is working to rid Horsell of the plastic throwaway bag.

Plastic bags are detrimental to the environment, contribute to litter, encourage a 'throwaway' mentality within the community and are unsustainable.

We propose that Horsell becomes throwaway plastic bag free by:

- Encouraging the use of re-usable cotton, hemp, canvas or jute bags and / or rattan baskets. - Asking traders of Horsell to charge customers 5-10p for a plastic bag alternative (such as a compostable cornstarch carrier bag) for purchases made 'on-the-go' or takeaways. - Having a communication campaign to make residents more aware of unsustainable consumption and to generate a 'reduce, reuse recycle' culture.

A secondary objective of this campaign, and perhaps the more 'environmentally' significant, is the objective of highlighting the issue of waste - what we throwaway and where it goes.
